Golfers can feel the history of Sin City at Las Vegas National

Plenty of modern golf courses in southern Nevada will dazzle with spectacular views, impeccable conditions and difficult holes, but few will give you a real sense of Las Vegas history. One exception is Las Vegas National, one of the few remnants of how life used to be in Sin City.

Princeville at Hanalei's Makai Golf Course: Put your ego aside, play this friendlier Kauai gem

For the resort golfer looking for those Hawaii coastline money shots, Princeville at Hanalei's Makai Golf Course has more oceanfront holes running along the North Shore. Both the Ocean and Lakes' nines weave out to the coast, and the Ocean's par-3 seventh hole, playing on rugged coastline 200 feet above the ocean, is among Kauai's most famous.

Athens area's Jennings Mill Country Club ain't Scotland, but it's some fine Georgia golf

Jennings Mill Country Club is an excellent Georgia golf course with tight, tree-lined fairways, a lot of mounding and interesting green complexes. A Bob Cupp design, Jennings Mill doesn't quite live up to its sometimes Scottish links comparisons, but it's a fine round of golf.

Kiva Dunes Golf Course is a seaside course you'll never forget in Gulf Shores, Alabama

Kiva Dunes Golf Course is the type of course you travel to play, the kind of showpiece that is a great impetus to come to the Alabama Gulf Shores and discover the other outstanding golf courses and 32 miles of beaches with white sand that looks like its special ordered from a postcard.

Golf Club of Quincy is an underrated Florida gem for a very pleasing price

The Golf Club of Quincy is one of the best deals in north Florida/south Georgia, even if you don't consider its $25 green fees. Only a few miles outside of Tallahassee, in a part of Florida that has some rare hills, the Golf Club of Quincy matches up against any of its larger neighbors to the east, Tim McDonald writes.

Kauai's best? Hard to argue against Poipu Bay Golf Course as Hawaiian island's top resort course

Partnering with the Grand Hyatt Resort on Kauai's south shore, and a host to the post-season PGA Grand Slam of Golf, Poipu Bay Golf Course has all the elements of a world-class resort course - one you'll be itching to re-play as soon as you walk off the 18th green.

Like sand? Head to the desert-heavy Arroyo golf course at Red Rock Country Club in Las Vegas

If you like sand, you'll love the Arroyo Course at Red Rock Country Club. The Arnold Palmer signature golf course has close to 100 bunkers, but even more importantly, some 40 acres that used to be irrigated turf have been returned to the desert - ergo more sand ... and rocks and cacti.

Better bring your 'A' game to the demanding Prince Course at Princeville Resort on Kauai

Confident about your game? If you've scored a few low rounds lately, take your golf clubs over to the Hawaiian island of Kauai and the Prince Course at the Princeville Resort. Trying to take down one of Robert Trent Jones Jr.'s most demanding courses can make for a maddening afternoon.

Enjoy the tradition of the British Open at Royal Links Golf Club in Las Vegas

It doesn't take a great deal of imagination at Royal Links Golf Club to get a feel for the history of British Open golf. Many of its holes were inspired by British Open host courses, including the revered St. Andrews.

Classy University of Georgia Golf Course states its case among best college courses

The University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens has some legendary names behind its classy design. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1968 and re-built last year by Davis Love III. The course has the classic RTJ themes, like the strategically placed bunkers perilously close to landing areas. And now it has some of the sweetest, velvety-smooth greens anywhere.

Cimarrone Golf Club in Jacksonville, Florida: "The Wild One" isn't exactly wild but it is an excellent play

The Cimarrone Golf Club in Jacksonville, Fla. is one of those golf courses that manages to preserve its aesthetics while on the verge of being overwhelmed by the sheer number of houses crowded around its fairways.

Looking to get a taste of Pinehurst in Las Vegas? Try Desert Pines Golf Club

Many golf courses claim to be unique, and on some level, they all are, but there really is nothing like Desert Pines Golf Club. On what other golf course in Southern Nevada will you find thousands of Carolina pine trees? Where else can you find a two-tiered, climate-controlled practice center? And how many golf courses are just 10 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip and 15 minutes from the airport?

Lehman's new-school Sonoran Course gives Omni Tucson National more desert bite

The Omni Tucson National resort wanted a completely different type of golf course when it brought in Tom Lehman to design a track to compliment its PGA Tour-host Catalina Course. The 2006 Ryder Cup captain didn't disappoint, turning out the Sonoran Course, 18 holes of dramatic desert golf that couldn't look much more different from Catalina's parkland layout.

Ocean golf that makes you think: Revamped Pelican Hill North delivers the oxymoron

In rethinking Pelican Hill North as part of its owner Irvine Company's grand vision for a Mediterranean-style, crazy luxury resort scheduled to open in late 2008, Tom Fazio uses the second chance to make you think. He infused his original design with subtle points to go with the ocean blue.

Thomasville's Country Oaks Golf Course is a mean, little Georgia course

Country Oaks Golf Course is only 6,200 yards from the tips, but it is a tough 6,200 yards. And like the unruly little neighborhood bully - unwashed hair, torn clothes - the layout isn't in particularly great shape.

Spring training's Arizona golf Surprise: Cheap convenience in Sun Village's immaculate par 3

If you're in Surprise, Arizona to catch spring training game, check out Sun Village, a golf course less than five minutes from the stadium that's just too tempting to pass up. It may not be quite what you expect: Pass through the gate, and you've entered an adult-living community where no residents under 55 are allowed. All golfers are welcome to play, however.

Amelia River Golf Club in Fernandina Beach, Florida gets the full resort treatment

The former Royal Amelia is now known as Amelia River Golf Club and, with the exception of a ritzy, new clubhouse, it hasn't changed much, which is good. It was always a popular venue because of its natural setting; while some holes border the Fernandina Beach municipal airport, much of the course plays through the beautiful flora and fauna of Amelia Island, through live oaks, sabal palms, wax myrtle and pines.

Challenging greens, T-Mates and Las Vegas Valley views make Rio Secco Golf Club shine

At Rio Secco Golf Club, you have to not only find the greens, but the right portion of the greens. Get above the hole, and a two-putt in many cases is almost impossible. Put it in a really bad place, and a four-putt is a possibility, even for skilled players. "It's a tough challenge, but fair," Head Golf Professional Charles Packard said. "The biggest challenge comes on the greens."

Pensacola-area's Club at Hidden Creek not so hidden any more

The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla. is a semi-private golf facility that opened in 1988 and has hosted qualifying rounds for the U.S. Open, as well as earning a 4 1/2 star rating from Golf Digest. It's a fairly open layout, with scattered pines and plenty of room off the tee.

Wailea Golf Club's Gold Course: Historic rocks with ocean views on South Maui

Wailea Golf Club's Gold Course is a big, near bionic Hawaii golf course that doesn't rely on a few ocean looks to carry the day. Instead, it challenges your guts, especially on the back nine. There are shots up to greens, down through skinny driving alleys and lakes to clear.
